[WEIRD-MEDDLE RECORD]
Remembering Sapporo’s finest record shop!

One of the best music places in Sapporo, WEIRD MEDDLE RECORD,
closed down…

It is tragic, since this means a big hole in the music culture of Sapporo, but nevertheless we
wanted to preserve a little piece of the shop including its owner Akiba-san with this post!
We remember the various descriptions about the shop….such as

“Wallpaper* City Guide: Sapporo” (Phaidon 2009) writes about the store:
*******************************************************************************
Takahiro Akiba’s tiny back-to-basics record store is a magnet for music-lovers. Since
April
2002, Weird-Meddle has offered an impressive catalogue – from obscure British
indie
bands to cult Sapporo talent such as post-rockers Qodibop and master
percussionist Ikuro
Takahashi.
The current store opened in 2004, and looks like a record shop should – the wooden
racks
are handmade, the speakers are stacked awkwardly along the wall, the CDs and
records
seem to be partially organised the best, and the front door is covered with flyers.
A section is devoted to CDs by local bands – Akiba will play a few tracks to help you
choose.

He can also point you towards the best venues at which to catch local talent live.
*******************************************************************************

Good old times.

Wham!、Culture Club、Duran Duran、
Michael Jackson

The Style Cousil

Records(レコード店)にあえてせず、Record(記

THE SPACE LADY – ‘The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits’

MARTOC – Music for Alien Ears

WOO –  When The Past Arrives

[INTERVIEW with Akiba-san]

 • Where and when did you get into music? And what kind?

I recorded a lot of popular songs from television and radio music programs on my radio-
cassette recorder when I was in grade 3 to 5. When I was in 6th grade, I discovered pop
music from overseas. I started with Wham!, Culture Club, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson
and then started listening to different types of music.

• What was the first record you bought with your own money?
The first Japanese music record I bought was the theme song from the anime movie
“Gundam” and the first foreign records I bought were Brian Adams and The Style Cousil
which I bought at the same time. The records are at my parents’ home, so I don’t have
them with me.

•At what point did you realize you wanted to run a record store? What went through your mind?
Since I was about 18 years old, I vaguely had it as a dream, because I loved visiting record
stores from when I was in junior high. I thought of how wonderful it would be have my own
record store.

• So when did you open the Weird Meddle store?
When I was 19 years old I worked in a used record store for half a year and then joined
Tower Records when I was 23 years old, where I worked for 5 and a half years. After I
quit working there, I gave it a great deal of thought and decided to open my own store at
age 31.

• What is the meaning of your store name? Is there a story behind the name?
Initially there were two of us planning to open the store. We summed up our personalities
in one word, which was weird and meddling (me) and we just translated them into English.
I purposely did not use the word “records” (record store) but instead used “record” (a
chronicle) and used it as the store name. In Japanese it would mean something like “a
weird and meddling chronicle”.

• What are your musical recommendations? What are you into these days?
Unique ethnic music, discovered recordings by amateur musicians that have gone
unnoticed, also sounds with no melody, extreme works, (the lack of sound quality, presence
or absence of performance skills, cheerful or gloomy etc.), things with only a few sounds or
with gaps, early punk – post punk, and all music that makes me feel youthful. Specifically
it’s THE SPACE LADY – ‘The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits‘, MARTOC – Music for Alien
Ears
WOO – When The Past Arrives.
** See videos above**

• What would you like the customers to enjoy when they walk into your store? What
kind of experiences would you like them to have?

I always hope that people will discover something they’d never heard before.
It can be anything, but I’d be delight if that discovery could be the start of something.
There is still a lot that I don’t know, so I hope I can learn about the worlds each person is knowledgeable about.
